Brokaw, Linneman, Rivlin & McClellan to Headline 18th Annual NIC Conference
Event to Focus on 'Opportunity Amid Economic Uncertainty'

Annapolis, Md. – Already recognized as the industry’s premier dealmaking event, the 18th Annual NIC
Conference will have the added draw of four nationally respected individuals who will headline its plenary
sessions: Tom Brokaw, Alice Rivlin, Ph.D., Peter Linneman, Ph.D. and Mark B. McClellan, Ph.D., as announced
today by the National Investment Center for the Seniors Housing & Care Industry (NIC). The conference
will take place on September 10-12, 2008, in Chicago, Ill., and annually attracts the top seniors housing
and care providers, financiers and developers representing national, regional and community-based, and
even international, portfolios.
This year’s conference theme is: “Opportunity Amid Economic Uncertainty: In This Market You Must Be
Well-Informed.” To speak to this theme, Ms. Rivlin and Dr. Linneman will deliver the opening plenary
address on Thursday morning, September 11.
One of the most influential policymakers in Washington, D.C., Ms. Rivlin was formerly
the vice chair of the Federal Reserve Board and is a senior fellow in the Economic Studies Program at
the Brookings Institution. She is renowned as a visionary thinker “with a keen eye on the changing state
of the national economy, the health system and the state of U.S. cities.” During her address, she will
talk about the global and U.S. economies as a whole and, specifically, the effects of inflation, the
continuing impact of the subprime market fallout and arising macro economic trends. She will also relate
current conditions to the presidential election and suggest what economic policies to expect depending
on which candidate is elected into office.
Also speaking at the opening plenary is Dr. Linneman, who is back by popular demand.
One of the nation’s leading strategic thinkers in real estate, Linneman challenged seniors housing and
care leaders at last year’s conference to develop industry transparency or risk being ignored by real
estate professionals. This year, he will expand on this issue by addressing questions such as: What
does transparency mean to the seniors housing and care industry? Why is it important to tackle this
issue now? What can be learned from other commercial real estate property types? Principal of Linneman
Associates and professor of Real Estate, Finance and Public Policy at the Wharton School of Business,
Linneman will also present the results of his recently completed analysis on industry transparency.
Later on Thursday, September 11, Mr. Brokaw will be the keynote speaker at the luncheon
plenary address. One of the most iconic figures in television news’ history, he was anchor and managing
editor of “NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw” for more than two decades, setting the standard for broadcast
news. More recently, he wrote two best-selling books, The Greatest Generation and The Greatest
Generation Speaks, which have been credited with renewing America’s pride in its own history
and helping to bridge the generation gap.
“These books highlight the unique lives and awesome sacrifices of the men and women who lived in the
Great Depression and fought in World War II," said Kathryn A. Sweeney, managing director - US Senior
Housing, The GPT Group, and NIC Board chair. “The majority of seniors residing in retirement communities
today are representative of this generation. How appropriate to have Mr. Brokaw address us on the lives
of those who affect NIC attendees each and every day. We are delighted to have him, as well as Ms. Rivlin,
Dr. Linneman and Dr. McClellan, as keynote speakers this year.”
Finally, at a special afternoon plenary session that day, Dr. McClellan, director of
the Engelberg Center for Healthcare Reform and senior fellow, Economic Studies at the Brookings Institution
will address “The Future Funding of Long-Term Care.” Dr. McClellan has a highly distinguished record
in public service and in academic research. He is the former administrator for the Centers for Medicare
and Medicaid Services (2004-2006) and the former commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (2002-2004).
He also served as a member of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers and senior director for health
care policy at the White House (2001–2002). During this session, he will address how he feels the November
elections may impact long-term care funding and reform in the short term, as well as how the nation
will deliver and pay for long-term care in the future in order to meet the coming challenge of the baby
boom generation.
In addition to the keynote addresses, breakout sessions on financing topics and operating performance
issues will be held on Thursday and Friday, September 11 and 12, 2008. Attendees will also have many
opportunities to network and conduct business. Along with a dedicated Networking Lounge throughout the
event, a reception will be held both evenings.
Attendance for the 18th Annual NIC Conference is limited to the first 1,600 registrants and space tends
to fill up by early summer. Registration fees range from $1,000 (for operators with 1-10 properties)
to $1,750. After July 23, 2008, a $200 late fee will apply (if space is still available).
