The recently concluded 21st Annual NIC Conference featured keynotes and breakouts
that engaged the audience and addressed timely issues in the industry as well as
the economy.
Michael Lewis was the Opening Keynote speaker, the day before the screen adaptation
of his book "Moneyball" hit theaters and shortly before the release of his latest
book "Boomerang." Lewis spoke to the global issues of the credit bubble of 2002-2008
and its impact on both the U.S. and the global economy as well as the role the U.S.
played in the ongoing global economic crisis.
Giving the audience a taste of life in DC, Jim VandeHei, Executive Editor of POLITICO,
gave a rousing insider's perspective on what the 2012 Presidential campaign is likely
to look like. VandeHei analyzed the top competitors for the Republican nomination
, the impact of healthcare reform and where it looks like the debt panel will play
the most significant role in the coming year.
On Friday morning, the "Year of the Health Care REIT" kicked off the day with panelists
from the three largest REITS, moderated by Mike Kirby of Green Street Advisors.
This panel was a big draw for attendees, and set attendance records for the largest
Friday morning session in memory. The panelists spoke to the big year of deals in
2011 and opportunities in the sector for 2012 and beyond, each with their own perspective.
When asked about NOI trends, there was lively discussion but no consensus among
the panelists in terms of NOI growth rates for the future.
